Uses archaeological and literary sources to discuss the beginnings of urbanism in the ancient Mediterranean region, with particular focus on 5th-century Athens and Imperial Rome. The topic must be submitted to the department representative and the appropriate adviser decided upon by April 1 of the semester preceding that in which the student will be enrolled in the course. The student and the departmental representative will request supervision of the research paper from an appropriate faculty member in a department offering Ancient Studies courses.
